  • Sparking her Dream Career – Mia's Story

  • Apprentice Electrician

Posted: 08 January 2023

After exploring a potential career as an Electrician, completing work experience with a qualified Electrician and a year and a half at college doing an Electrical Installation course, Mia decided to apply for HMS’ Electrical Apprenticeship to start working in an established organisation.

“I knew an Apprenticeship with HMS would be a great opportunity for me and that it would set me up for life. By doing my Apprenticeship at HMS – an organisation that takes pride in their staff and Apprentices – I feel like I am already learning so much!

“Throughout school I always struggled as I am dyslexic. I was told I would never pass any of my GCSE’s, which was a real knock to my confidence, but I knew that Dyslexia couldn’t stop me learning and becoming successful. So, I chose to do Electronics as one of my GCSE options and just loved it. This started my passion for a career as an Electrician as I realised I prefer working in a more hands-on role, and I now know that working for HMS was the best decision I ever made!”

Working closely with her mentor, Mike, Mia is enjoying learning all the tricks of the trade. “I have enjoyed learning new things and pushing myself to overcome new challenges. I have also really enjoyed meeting new people and feel privileged to be learning from professionals and to be delivering an excellent service to the community we serve.”

Already supporting HMS’ team of Electricians to repair and replace electrical accessories, along with testing all equipment to make sure everything is safe and running correctly, Mia is an integral part of the team and has been sharing her experiences with others.

“My biggest achievement so far was when I was chosen to speak to a group of teenagers about Apprenticeships and told them how I started my career. I told them things that I wish I heard when I was their age and gave them tips to help them figure out the careers they might want to go into.”

Now working to complete her Apprenticeship, Mia is working to spread the word to other young women about opportunities available in the industry, while completing her qualification.

“I have realised that being an Electrician is my dream job and know I am on the right path to achieving everything I want to.”
