This week is National Apprenticeship Week and as an organisation committed to giving local people opportunities to advance in their chosen career, HMS works closely with partners across the North West, such as St Helens College, to increase access to apprenticeships.
It is no secret that there is a shortage of skills in the construction sector and a need to attract new talent to the industry, so it is imperative we are part of the solution and create apprenticeships that are engaging and rewarding.
At any one time, HMS employs over 25 apprentices who work across the business in a variety of construction disciplines including electrical, plumbing, joinery, plastering, horticulture, site management and Quantity Surveying. We also invest in business administration and scheduling apprenticeships and offer people the opportunity to join our office based teams.
Because we offer a diverse choice of apprenticeships, we can tailor opportunities to the individual, allowing them to pursue a career rather than just secure a job.
Alongside practical support and learning directly from an experienced team of construction and maintenance specialists, all apprentices have access to support from other parts of the Group, including pastoral support, money advice and ongoing support to develop wider skills essential for a successful career.
Lynn Greaves, Joiner Apprentice, said: “After taking a career break of 11 years to raise my children, I thought an apprenticeship wasn’t for me, but after seeing the advert on Facebook and applying, here I am!
“I really love getting up each morning and that I’m given the opportunity to get involved with everything from fitting kitchens to plumbing. Apprenticeships are fantastic and I would recommend them to anyone.”
HMS’ Managing Director, Paul Worthington, said: “At HMS, we invest wholeheartedly into apprenticeships so we can contribute to the next generation of highly skilled operational and support teams. We have been offering apprenticeships since 2011 and have recorded huge successes, with many people choosing to stay with HMS once their apprenticeship has finished.
“It is vital for us, as an organisation, to unlock the skills and potential we have here in the North West and to continue building our legacy as a company that invests in and helps grow its local communities.”
