Leading construction and maintenance organisation, HMS, were delighted to give Tom Wilcock and his family the gift of independence through the renovation of a modern, fit-for-purpose level access bathroom.
Tom, 25, has autism and a speech disorder meaning that he will always live at home with his parents, Diane and Paul, in Little Budworth, Cheshire.
After living in the property for eight years, Diane and Paul applied for a grant through Cheshire West and Chester Council to adapt the family’s bathroom specifically for Tom so he would have a tailored, practical washroom he could use independently. It was important for the family to give Tom the privacy he needed in order to grow his confidence and skills.
Due to the nature of the works required, HMS have a dedicated Adapted Living Team who project manage this type of work and assign experienced operatives to complete the adaptation from start to finish, offering continuity and building relationships with the customer.
Working closely with Tom and his parents, the HMS team discussed the bespoke bathroom design and Tom’s personal requirements to ensure that our programme for works met fully with his needs. Skilled HMS operative, Carl, involved Tom in the project from the very beginning and ensured his views were listened to and his choices for fixtures and fittings were incorporated into the design where possible. Tom settled on a neutral bathroom colour scheme which he personalised with towels and bathmats which were red – his favourite colour.
Of his new bathroom and rainfall showerhead, Tom said; “It’s fantastic!”
Diane continued; “We were worried about people coming into the house and interrupting Tom’s daily routine as change and new people can often upset him. However, HMS and Carl were great from the beginning as they listened to us and made it a positive experience for Tom.
“From the start, Tom was involved and given the opportunity to choose the fixtures and fittings and HMS made sure disruption was kept to a minimum. Also, HMS ensured the same team were on site day in, day out, as consistency was vital to ensure Tom was relaxed and happy.
“Carl was brilliant and he solved all problems as they arose and was always making Tom laugh. The whole team did a fantastic job – the standard of craftsmanship is incredibly high and we are all extremely delighted with how the bathroom has turned out!”
Ian Kneale, HMS Adapted Living Contract Manager, added; “Being an organisation that places customers at the heart of everything that we do, works of this type offer an excellent opportunity to make a real positive impact on people’s lives. Adaptations such as this allow people to make the most of their home and can often make dramatic improvements to their wellbeing.
“Carl, along with the rest of the team, are not only highly skilled in refurbishment works but also, crucially, understand how important communication and the personal touches are to these customers and their families. This really sets us apart from other providers.”
